VERTICAL DRIFTS

"Drifting on the Fly" refers to the practice of checking the internal clearance (roundness/diameter) of tubulars (casing or tubing) as they are being run into the wellbore, rather than inspecting them only before they leave the pipe rack.

This "on-the-fly" method often uses specialized tools like our lightweight ASA polymer vertical drifts to ensure no obstructions exist without stopping operations.

Key Aspects of On-the-Fly Drifting

  • Efficiency: Allows inspection while the pipe is being made up, saving significant time compared to traditional, separate drift runs.

  • Safety & Prevention: Detects damaged joints or debris instantly, preventing, for example, stuck tools downhole, reducing the need for costly fishing operations. Our drifts float, just in case of an accidental wellbore drop.

  • Method: A cylindrical tool is positioned inside the tubing as it is run, ensuring the inner diameter is clear.

The Process

  • Our specially designed drift is inserted into the box end of the pipe while it is positioned in the V-door.

  • As the pipe is lifted into the vertical position, the drift slides through the pipe to the bottom.

  • Once the pin protector is removed, the drift is retrieved and immediately ready for installation in the next pipe.

Evaluate Before You Commit

We understand that new tooling must be proven in the field.

That’s why we offer free evaluation samples for side-by-side comparison against your existing steel or PTFE drifts.

Evaluation Process

  1. Request a sample

  2. Run it alongside your current drift

  3. Decide based on real performance
